Interstate 24 East downtown will be shut down overnight for repairs

An emergency repair to a barrier wall will shut down Interstate 24 East in downtown Chattanooga from 9 p.m. tonight until 6 a.m. Friday.

I-24 East will be completely closed at the high bridge at mile marker 178 beginning at 9 p.m. Traffic will be detoured around the work zone at exit 178, according to the Tennessee Department of Transportation.

In addition to I-24 East, the right lane of U.S. 27 South and the exit to Lookout Mountain from U.S. 27 South will also be closed during this work.

The release said TDOT operations crews will be repairing a concrete barrier wall that was severely damaged in a crash involving a jackknifed tractor trailer on Tuesday.

More delays are expected over the weekend on I-24 on Monteagle Mountain, where TDOT is resurfacing and maintaining the area from Bell Mill Road to the Marion County Line.

Beginning at 8 p.m. Friday, the contractor will close the left lane on I-24 West from MM 135 to MM 132.3 and will also close the left shoulder on I-24 East from MM 131.1 to MM 132.7 for the entire weekend. Traffic will be restored on Monday at 6 a.m.

The Tennessee Highway Patrol THP will assist with traffic control.
