COLUMBIANA, Ala. -- Shelby County sheriff's officials say a teenage boy is charged as an adult in a man's death after a fight at a swimming area.
Officials said in a statement that 16-year-old Eric Matthew Blackerby of Alabaster was arrested in the assault of 19-year-old William Allen Neff of Maylene Wednesday. Investigators say Neff was injured during a fight at a Cahaba River swimming area. Details on what led to the fight weren't immediately available.
Sheriff's officials say the teen was charged with assault and the charge was upgraded to murder when Neff died at a local hospital.
Officials say the teen is being held in the Shelby County Jail on $500,000 bond. It's unclear if Blackerby has an attorney.
