Hamilton County Mayor Jim Coppinger said he will respond today to a move by county commissioners last week to amend the budget and restock their discretionary funds.

Coppinger's spokesman, Mike Dunne, said in a statement released Sunday that the mayor will hold a news conference on the south steps of the Hamilton County Courthouse at 1 p.m.

Coppinger will "discuss the important actions he will be taking regarding the fiscal year 2015-16 budget that was amended by the Hamilton County Commission," Dunne's release stated.

Before passing the 2016 budget last week, commissioners pulled $900,000 from the general fund balance to reinstate their discretionary spending accounts.

In the past, commissioners each have been given $100,000 a year to spend in their districts. They have said the money goes to projects that might not otherwise be funded, but critics have called the practice political pork.

Coppinger said he left the near $1 million out of the budget because there was no revenue source to pay for it.

Dunne did not say what Coppinger's reaction will be.
