Chattanooga police visited 14 convenience stores across the city recently to determine if they were selling beer to underage buyers. Out of the 14 stores visited, six sold to buyers who were 18 or 19 years old, police said in a news release.
The compliance checks were conducted in preparation for spring break, and are a part of the Chattanooga Police Department's Crash Reduction Initiative, according to spokesman Kyle Miller.
"There is often a correlation between underage drinking and accidents," Miller said. "We hope the compliance checks will help reduce the number of traffic accidents."
The checks were conducted in coordination with the Hamilton County Coalition, which organized the underage buyers. The stores where clerks sold beer to minors were cited to appear before the Chattanooga Beer Board on April 16.
