The Hamilton County Medical Examiner ruled the death of UTC student Ali Ali as accidental, caused by hypothermia, according to the Chattanooga Police Department.

Ali, 24, was found on Maclellan Island on Jan. 18 after he had been missing for almost two weeks.

Toxicology testing was negative, and the autopsy showed no evidence of foul play, according to a news release. Findings consistent with hypothermia were present, and temperatures were as low as 20 degrees around that time, the release stated.

"We're currently treating this as an accidental death because that's all the information we have at this time," police Chief Fred Fletcher said. "At this time, we have no reason to believe that his death was caused by another."

CPD has investigated every lead it has received and will follow up on future leads, he said.

The investigation remains open.

Ali, a graduate engineering student from Sudan, disappeared Jan. 5. He was last seen at the Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science Building on UTC's campus.

Authorities still do not know much about where Ali was during the almost two weeks he was missing.

"We have little information about where he was during that time. That's probably why this case seems cryptic to people," Fletcher said. "Anyone concerned about this case should come forward with any information they have. We can't investigate unknowns, speculations or hypotheses."

Anyone with information about this case should call the Chattanooga Police Department at 423-698-2525.
