Chattanooga police: Mail carrier assaulted on Long Street

An angry Long Street resident punched out a mail carrier Saturday morning when a package he was expecting didn't arrive, Chattanooga police said.

Travis Smith, 25, has been charged with aggravated assault in the attack on Walter Lawrence, 40, according to a news release.

The United States Postal Inspection Service is investigating as well and federal charges could be added, the release stated.

Lawrence was injured but drove himself to the hospital, police said.
