One person is dead after a car crashed into a spa in Dalton, Ga., this morning.

Around 7:30, police say a red 2001 Honda Civic was traveling southbound on Highway 41 when a burgundy 2004 Mercury Mountaineer ran the stop sign at Willowdale Road and hit the Civic in the driver's side door.

The impact sent the Civic spinning into the front door of the GQ Spa, causing some damage to the building. Nobody in the building was hurt, police said.

The Mercury was driven by 21-year-old Spring Smith of Knoxville, according to a news release from the Dalton Police Department. Smith reportedly told investigators that the brakes on her vehicle failed.

The driver of the Civic, 36-year-old Joe Davis, of Rocky Face, was pronounced dead at the scene.

One passenger in the Civic, 33-year-old Amelia Shipman, of Rocky Face, was airlifted to Erlanger Medical Center in Chattanooga. Police say her condition is currently unknown. Another passenger, 39-year-old Jeff Dean, of Chatsworth, is in intensive care at Hamilton Medical Center in Dalton.

The crash remains under investigation. No charges have been filed at this time.
