Georgia trooper shoots traveler after I-75 speeding stop

TIFTON, Ga. -- Authorities say a Georgia State Patrol trooper shot a traveler on the shoulder of Interstate 75 during a traffic stop.

Georgia Bureau of Investigation spokeswoman Sherry Lang says the shooting happened just after 11 a.m. Friday near Tifton in southwest Georgia.

Lang says the trooper pulled over a driver for speeding. Special Agent In Charge J.T. Ricketson says the trooper learned the driver's license was suspended and was confronted by a male passenger when the woman was being taken into custody.

It's unclear whether the passenger and trooper were involved in a physical fight.

Ricketson says the man was taken into custody after being released from a local hospital.

Ricketson says the trooper's car was equipped with a dashboard camera, though the video has not been released.
