A 24-year-old woman is behind bars after police say she shot a 26-year-old man at an apartment complex on Highway 58 Saturday during what may have been an argument over drugs.

Witnesses told police that Kia Key argued with Gregory Hurt shortly before he was shot once in the arm and stomach, according to court documents. The shooting happened around 12:45 p.m. Monday at 5102 Highway 58.

Multiple witnesses saw Key holding a black handgun before and after Hurt was shot, according to court documents. One witness told police that Key chambered a round just before the gunshot.

Others said the shooting may have been about drugs.

Police found the handgun in a neighboring apartment and believe Key threw it through a kitchen window in an attempt to hide the weapon from police.

Investigators at the time said that Hurt's injuries were life-threatening. Erlanger Health System would not confirm his condition on Tuesday.

Key is charged with attempted first-degree murder, aggravated assault and tampering with evidence.

Hurt is one of about 52 people to be shot in about 45 incidents in Chattanooga so far this year.
