Apartment fire kills dog, leaves 2 people homeless

An apartment fire Friday night resulted in the death of a dog and the displacement of two people.

According to a release, Chattanooga firefighters responding to 2709 Citico Ave. saw heavy smoke and flames coming out of the window of apartment 5 in building B.

Battalion Chief Rick Sewell said the firefighters hit the fire hard and were able to put it out quickly, containing the fire to the one apartment.

No one was home at the time, but the family's pet dog died in the fire. The dollar loss was estimated at $50,000.

The American Red Cross of Southeast Tennessee was called in to provide assistance to the two residents.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
