Earl Gray is the new mayor of Fort Oglethorpe.

The former councilman defeated incumbent Lynn Long in the mayoral race this evening, 584 votes to 176. Judd Burkhart, a former mayor of the city who decided to run again this year, received 44 votes.

Gray resigned from his council seat this summer to run against Long, saying the mayor has caused too much discontent within city government.

In addition, Rhonda James edged Clay Kissner for the Ward 1 city council seat, 407-330.

Jim Childs also defeated Tracy Bass for the Ward 2 council seat, 448-204. Harold Silcox gained 129 votes in that race.

In Lyerly, Ga., a referendum to allow alcohol sales passed, 29-25. A referendum to keep fluoride in the water passed, 30-24.

In Summerville, Ga., Earl Parris defeated City Council seat 3 incumbent Dale Housch, 183-117. City Council seat 5 incumbent Zachary Martin defeated Charles Bennett, 219-85.

In Ringgold, Ga., there will be a runoff for the first new mayor in the last 49 years. Tony Hullender got 38 percent of the vote and Nick Millwood got 37 percent. Terry Crawford, Sara Clark and Larry Black win Ringgold City Council seats.

In Rossville, Ga., Brad Buff edged Larry Rose for the second council seat by three votes, 92-89. Michael Hicks secured the other seat. Hicks got 115 votes. Buff, Hicks and Rose were all running for two available seats.

In Dalton, Ga., incumbent Denise Andrea Wood defeated Greg Dent, 461-348, for the Alderman Ward 1 seat. Tyree "Ty" Goodlett defeated incumbent George Sadosuk, 457-384, for the Alderman Ward 3 seat.

In Walker County, Ga., voters approved renewing a 1-percent sales tax that will go toward the school system. The vote total was 972 yes, 354 no.
