The Johnson City Press reports in a letter to the board dated Nov. 10, Freedom From Religion Foundation Staff Attorney Rebecca Markert objected to the display of the flag during school board meetings.
The letter tells the board that it must immediately remove the flag and refrain from displaying it during future meetings.
The flag has been displayed at the front of the school board meeting room at the Central Schools office building, along with the U.S. flag and Tennessee state seal, since at least 2012.
School Board Chairman Tyler Engle said Tuesday that the board has contacted its attorney, Scott Bennett.
The FFRF is a national nonprofit organization.
