Whitfield County officers cleared after Monday's fatal shooting

Two Whitfield County officers involved in a fatal shooting Monday were cleared by the sheriff's office.

Sergeant Michael O'Mahony and Deputy Brad Mathis were both cleared and will resume their assigned duties, according to a statement by Sheriff Scott Chitwood.

The two officers fired their weapons, killing Brett Noblitt at the end of a high speed chase. Noblitt was followed by four officers before the chase ended on Maddox Mill Road when the Jeep pulled to the side of the road with flat tires, according to the statement.

Noblitt attempted to run over O'Mahony and Mathis before the officers fired their weapons, police say.

Noblitt was driving a Jeep Grand Cherokee when he was pulled over. He had outstanding warrants and refused to stop, ramming two patrol cars during the chase east of Dalton, according to a police news release.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation has seized a dashcam video that depicts the incident.
