The couple who Georgia police said ran over and killed a woman at a Wal-Mart after stealing her purse are suspected in a string of similar crimes in at least four states.

The man and woman were arrested Saturday in Manchester, Tenn., a few days after the dead woman's credit card was found in Chattanooga.

Allen Seebaran, criminal intelligence officer with the Covington, Ga., Police Department, said 27-year-old Brandon Shawn Smith and 37-year-old Stephanie Marie Rodriguez are suspects in at least 10 robberies in Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia.

"I will have a more definite number in the morning when I speak with the detectives who conducted the interviews with the inmates," Seebaran said via email on Sunday.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported Smith and Rodriguez are believed to have stolen a car in Virginia and hit the road targeting elderly women at Wal-Marts along Interstate 95 and then Interstate 20 to Covington.

Police said that's where a man driving a silver Honda grabbed 65-year-old Marsha Johnson's purse on Nov. 16. Johnson resisted, and the assailants ran over her several times and killed her, police said.

Her credit card was found on the grounds of the Koch Foods chicken plant in Chattanooga last week.

Then, on Saturday detectives received a phone tip from a Tennessee resident who identified the suspects and vehicle police were looking for, according to a police news release.

The Manchester Police Department found and stopped the vehicle and took Smith and Rodriguez into custody.

Smith and Rodriguez are currently in custody in Manchester awaiting extradition to Covington, the release said.
