UPDATE: Tennessee Highway Patrol respond to 13 accidents this evening in Chattanooga area

As one of the busiest travel weekends of the year met heavy rain on Sunday, numerous wrecks clogged the roadways.

A dispatcher from the Tennessee Highway Patrol said Sunday night at 9:25 p.m. that since 3 p.m., the THP had been called to 18 accidents in the 12-county Chattanooga district.

Chattanooga police also worked numerous traffic accidents Sunday, according to Hamilton County's 911 website. Police spokesman Kyle Miller said Sunday night he was not sure exactly how many wrecks police responded to.

Drivers traveling through Chattanooga are experiencing major delays on both I-75 and I-24 in both directions.

There are more than a dozen reported incidents and accidents through the region on the interstates with major delays stretching as far west on I-24 as Jasper and extending east to the intersection of the two interstates. On I-75, major delays stretch several miles east of the intersection and as far south as Ringgold, Georgia, just north of the Battlefield Parkway overpass.
