Investigators gathering evidence in the shotgun slaying of an 8-year-old girl by a schoolmate haven't progressed enough to say if the alleged shooter's parents will face any charges.

"I can't say because it's still under investigation," Jefferson County Sheriff G.W. "Bud" McCoig said Tuesday.

MaKayla Dyer died Saturday after a single 12-gauge shotgun blast entered her chest about 7:30 p.m. as she and two companions stood outside the open window of a trailer. Authorities said an 11-year-old boy got his father's shotgun and fired the fatal shot from the window.
