Updated: Inmate charged with attempted murder in Moccasin Bend attack

An inmate at the Hamilton County Jail has been charged with attempted first degree murder and aggravated assault after he was involved in an incident Wednesday at the Moccasin Bend Mental Health Facility.

Leviticus Avery, 37, was served the warrants at the Hamilton County Jail, according to the Chattanooga Police Department.

The victim, Kevin Green, 38, was struck in the head with an object and transported to a local hospital. Green, who had been taken to the facility by a family member, was listed in critical condition and later died.

Avery has a long rap sheet including charges of car jacking, aggravated domestic assault and aggravated burglary.

Avery was in jail awaiting a Nov. 4 court date for aggravated assault and vandalism charges filed on Aug. 26, according to the Hamilton County Court's website.

Update: The suspect's charges have been increased to murder.
