The Chattanooga Transportation Department is reconfiguring two streets to improve safety and enhance options, according to a news release.

Vine Street from Palmetto Street to Central Avenue through the historic Fort Wood neighborhood will have one lane converted to a two-way bicycle track, leaving a single lane for one-way vehicle traffic and a lower speed limit. The release said the transportation department worked with the neighborhood association on the changes.

Also, West 12th Street from Carter to Grove streets has been reconfigured, changing the three-lane road to two lanes plus a buffered bike, a pedestrian crossing and sidewalks.

The release said West 12th is the gateway to the Chattanooga Youth and Family Development Offices, and that the changes will calm traffic and improve safety.
