ATLANTA -- Fewer than 39 percent of Georgia students in each grade level tested last year were proficient or better in English language arts or math.

The statewide figures released Thursday are the first results of Georgia's new tests. Similar levels of students in each grade level scored proficient or better in science and social studies.

Students in third through 12th grade took the "Georgia Milestones" test this spring.

Education officials have cautioned for months that Georgia's previous state exam set expectations lower than any other state, meaning some students deemed proficient in the past would not score as well on the new test.

Scores for individual districts and schools are expected in October.

Georgia decided to design its own Common Core-aligned exam rather than stay in a testing group with other states.
