6-year-old girl in critical condition after head-on crash near Central High School

A 6-year-old girl is in critical condition after suffering serious injuries in a head-on crash in Chattanooga this morning.

The accident happened around 7:20 a.m. at 5800 Hwy 58. near Central High School, according to a news release from police.

Investigators say a 1989 Ford Thunderbird driven by 53-year-old Annette Chenkus and occupied by 25-year-old Kimberly Furman and a granddaughter was waiting to merge with traffic in the center turn lane.

That's when a 1999 Ford F150 driven by 31-year-old Michael Watkins drifted out of its lane for an unknown reasonand struck the Thunderbird, police said. Watkins suffered minor injuries.

Police said no occupant in the Thunderbird was properly restrained.

Furman and Chenkus are listed in stable condition, the release said.
