Chattanooga police have identified the driver who swerved from the road and killed a well-known Chattanooga runner as 58-year-old Valerie Bray.

Bray was driving on Moccasin Bend Road on Saturday when she drove into 28-year-old Cameron Bean, who was running against traffic along the side of the road.

Bean was mortally injured and died on Monday. He was one of the top runners in the country and excelled in the 3,000-meter steeple chase. A Chattanooga native, Bean returned to the city in August after spending five years running professionally at an outfit in North Carolina.

Bray told police she did not see Bean because the sun was in her eyes, but police on Thursday said they are still investigating the cause of the crash.

Investigators have interviewed Bray multiple times and are downloading and collecting all electronic data available, a release from the department states.

The investigation will be extensive. Bray has not yet been charged with any crime.

Chattanooga police ask that anyone who witnessed the incident call 423-698-2525.
