Two Chattanooga police officers pulled an unconscious man from a smoky apartment Sunday night.

Officers Aaron Williams, Matthew Robertson and Daniel Russell were at an apartment complex at 1228 Poplar St. searching a fugitive when a woman came outside and told them her apartment was full of smoke.

The officers alerted the fire department, then Williams and Russell went into the apartment where they discovered a burning pot on the stove. Williams pulled the pot off the stove.

The apartment was filled with thick smoke, so the officers stepped outside for fresh air before going back in to try to ensure no one was inside the apartment.

Russell then found a man unconscious on a couch and dragged him out of the apartment. He was treated for smoke inhalation and taken to a local hospital.

He told officers he started cooking but fell asleep.

Police Chief Fred Fletcher said he is proud of the three offices who responded to the scene.

"The swift actions taken by these offices saved this man's life and serve as a clear example of our officers facing danger no matter the risk to themselves," he said.
