The University of Tennessee Medical Center is accused in a lawsuit of killing a beloved Jacksboro Police Department detective via an overdose of pain medication while he was being treated for injuries suffered in a car crash.

Attorneys Gregory P. Isaacs and Chris Coffey on Friday filed in Knox County Circuit Court a wrongful-death lawsuit against UT Medical Center and University Health System Inc. on behalf of widow Geraldine Starrett in the Jan. 30, 2015, death of Detective Mike Starrett.

The lawsuit seeks $7.5 million in damages. UT Medical Center was served with notice in July of the possibility of legal action pursuant to the state's requirements under medical malpractice laws.
