A suspect who was identified by a shooting victim in an incident from last month was shot and killed during an attempted robbery less than two weeks later.

According to police, Steven Hurston, 19, was positively identified as the shooter in an incident on Cowart Street on March 13, by the victim, Reuben Simpson, 35, who survived a gunshot wound to the head.

However, on March 26, Hurston was shot and killed in a botched robbery attempt that police responded to at approximately 12:00 a.m.

The victim in that case, Joshua Smith, 30, told police he had met a woman online and arranged to meet her.

He said he began exiting his car in the 1600 block of Hamill Road and was walking to a duplex with the woman when an unknown black male appeared from beside the home demanding money and pointing a gun at him.

Smith said he refused to hand over any money and instead shot Hurston who fell to the ground. Smith then alerted the police and Hurston was found unresponsive on scene.

Hurston was previously arrested in July of last year in Red Bank for simple assault and disorderly conduct.
