Georgia pastor charged with molesting child at church

BRUNSWICK, Ga. - A pastor charged with molesting a child at his church in this Georgia port city turned himself in at the county jail Friday, but his wife said she suspects authorities rushed to judgment.

Kenneth Adkins, pastor of The Greater Church in Brunswick, was charged with one count of child molestation and one count of aggravated child molestation. Both charges stem from crimes against a single victim, a child under the age of 16, said Stacy Carson, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation agent in charge of the case.

Carson said Adkins was arrested Friday morning when he turned himself in at the Glynn County jail. She would not give the victim's age or gender. She declined to say how recently the alleged abuse occurred but said it happened at the church, in a vehicle and at the victim's home.

Adkins' attorney, Kevin Gough, said he was still gathering details about the case but said Adkins maintains his innocence.

Gough also released a statement from Adkins' wife, Charlotte "Stormy" Adkins, who called her husband's arrest a "rush to judgment."

"While I am confident of my husband's innocence, that the charges made against him are false, and that he will ultimately be cleared of any wrongdoing, I share my husband's concern for the alleged victim," Charlotte Adkins said.
