A stove that was left on caused a house fire early this evening that severely damaged the home and displaced the family.

The Chattanooga Fire Department first received the call shortly before 6:00 p.m., responding to the home in the 4600 block of Kemp Drive with five fire companies, according to a release.

Battalion Chief Rick Boatwright said the fire started in the kitchen and then spread into the attic. Firefighters were able to control the blaze, but Boatwright estimated the dollar loss to the home at $50,000.

The cause of the fire is being ruled accidental and Boatwright said a stove eye had been left on, igniting something that had been left on top.

No injuries were reported, but the displaced family, two adults and a two-year-old child, were being assisted by volunteers with the American Red Cross of Southeast Tennessee following the loss of their home.
