Chris Anderson has announced he will seek re-election to the Chattanooga City Council District 7 seat.

District 7 includes Alton Park, Downtown, East Lake and St. Elmo.

Challengers Manny Rico and Erskine Oglesby Jr. have qualified to run for the seat. Montrell Besley and Donald O'Connor have picked up papers to qualify as candidates.

"I ran for election four years ago to improve the conditions in District 7.," Anderson said. "We have made great strides and progress but there is still much work to do. Now is the time to continue moving forward, not backward to failed leadership and old policies that didn't work."

Anderson, who serves as the chairman of the council's Economic and Community Development Committee, has represented District 7 since 2013. That year he unseated Rico, taking over 56 percent of the vote in a four-way race.

He cites a number of accomplishments, including securing millions of dollars for a new park in Alton Park, brokering a deal to save Hawkins Ridge in St. Elmo from development and increasing the number of affordable housing units downtown.

Anderson said he has championed other benefits for the distinct, such as traffic-calming measures and an increased number of parks, playgrounds and trails.

"Since 2013, District 7 has seen the most capital budget spending every year and has had the most roads paved," Anderson said. "I have developed a reputation as a fighter, but that's how you get results. I'm proud of my record of fighting for my constituents."

Elections for the Chattanooga mayor and city council members will be held March 7.
