One lane of eastbound Interstate 24 will be closed this morning while highway crews perform an asbestos inspection.

Later tonight and again on Monday, the eastbound lane of M.L. King Boulevard will be closed overnight for demolition of the U.S. 27 bridge over the road.

Tennessee Department of Transportation spokeswoman Jennifer Flynn said the I-24 inspection will take place near the U.S. 27 interchange in the area where a bridge deck panel was recently damaged. TDOT is making plans for an emergency repair of the deck panel.

Flynn said the lane will be reopened as soon as the inspection is complete.

The M.L. King closures are set for 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. today and Monday. The westbound lanes of King will be closed Tuesday and Wednesday, also from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.

The closures will allow contract workers to demolish the U.S. 27 bridge as part of the rebuilding of the highway through downtown. Detours will be posted.
