A 7-year-old boy died in a Knoxville hospital Monday after he was shot in Crossville during the afternoon, Crossville police chief Rod Shoap confirmed in an email.
Police were called to a business on U.S. 27 in Crossville at 2:50 p.m. and found the boy bleeding from his head.
Officers discovered that four children had been left alone in a vehicle while their mother and stepfather were paying a bill inside the business. Police were told that one of the children located a loaded, semi-automatic pistol inside their mother's purse which had been left in the vehicle.
The family is from White County.
The boy was airlifted to Knoxville for treatment. the Cumberland County District Attorney General's office and the Department of Children's Services have been notified.
