Attorneys earlier this week set a trial date for a 36-year-old man who is charged with the rape and murder of a 3-year-old child.

Starting Jan. 24, 2017, a jury will decide whether Rhasean Lowry is guilty of felony murder, aggravated child abuse, child abuse, rape of a child, and false reports in Hamilton County Criminal Court. On Tuesday, attorneys also agreed to check up on the case on Dec. 5.

Police say Tatiana Emerson, 3, died on Aug. 27, 2014, the day after Lowry, her mother's boyfriend, brought her to a Chattanooga hospital. He told authorities she had fallen down some stairs at the motel, he noticed blood coming from her mouth and immediately took her to the hospital.

Tatiana and her 5-year-old brother were living with Lowry and their mother, Melanie Emerson, for a few weeks before Tatiana died, family members said. The children sometimes lived with their grandparents in Madisonville, Tenn., for a few months at a time.

Both Lowry and Melanie Emerson were charged in the case. Emerson faces one charge of aggravated child endangerment and is next scheduled to appear before Criminal Court Judge Don Poole on Aug. 24.
