A fight between two men in a vehicle traveling from Nashville to a Georgia drug and alcohol rehab facility ended in a shooting Saturday night on Interstate 24 in Marion County.

Police in Jasper, Tenn., charged Clinton Fielder with aggravated assault after he allegedly attacked Timothy Pass, who was escorting Fielder to the rehab facility. The two were in a car being driven by Fielder's girlfriend, according to Lt. Scott Evans of the Jasper Police Department.

The driver got off the highway at exit 158 at Pass' request, according to police, but Pass told authorities Fielder wouldn't stop fighting.

Eventually, Pass pulled a handgun and shot Fielder in the foot, police said.

"He [Pass] said that he didn't want to hurt him [Fielder]," Evans said. "He just wanted him to stop."

The car stopped at Love's Travel Stop, where Pass jumped out. Fielder chased after him but Pass hid behind the building. Soon, emergency personnel arrived and took Fielder to Erlanger hospital for treatment. Then he was arrested for aggravated assault and taken to the Marion County Jail.

"You never really know what's going to come off the interstates," Evans said. "There's so many people out there from so many different places and you just never know."

An employee at Love's Travel Stop said the two restaurants that operate out of the building were shut down for about 30 minutes as the altercation and investigation occurred.
