A 65-year-old Soddy-Daisy man was saved this evening from Pocket Wilderness, but his dog was euthanized after a hiking accident, according to a press release from Amy Maxwell with Hamilton County Emergency Services.

The man was hiking with his 150-pound German Shepherd when the dog began showing signs of dehydration. He gave his water to the dog but then started to become dehydrated himself, according to the release. They began hiking toward a stream, but the dog fell 40 feet off a cliff.

Several emergency agencies went to help due to the heat. Hamilton County Emergency Services helped the man while three other emergency personnel groups helped the dog.

A veterinarian was called and advised them to euthanize the dog due to the extent of its injuries, according to the release. The owner agreed and was allowed to spend several final moments with his dog. He was then taken to Erlanger Medical Center to be evaluated, according to the release.
