LILBURN, Ga. - A third alligator has been spotted in the Atlanta area recently.
Officials with the Georgia Department of Natural Resources confirm to multiple media outlets that a five-foot-long alligator was spotted Sunday in a pond shared by two landowners near Lilburn.
Homeowner Bill Compton tells WSB-TV that the department is considering letting the animal be, as long as it does not appear to be a threat.
Earlier this month, an alligator that had been spotted along the Chattahoochee River sporadically since 2007 was captured and relocated due to safety concerns.
In April, an alligator was spotted near Peachtree City, making it the first alligator sighting in the city in five years.
Alligators are common in south Georgia, but metro Atlanta is not part of their typical range.
