Kayaker dies at Lake Junior in Chattanooga

A 53-year-old man died after an incident at Lake Junior in Chattanooga early Tuesday evening.

A 53-year-old man is dead after an incident at Lake Junior early Tuesday evening.

According to Bruce Garner, a spokesman for the Chattanooga Fire Department, two men were kayaking on the lake.

One man began paddling away and when he looked back, all he could see was his friend's overturned kayak, a paddle and a cap floating in the water. The missing man was not wearing a personal flotation device.

Authorities were contacted and several responding agencies began a search operation for the missing man.

About 8 p.m. the man's body was located and removed from the lake. The body was sent to the medical examiner's office where the cause of death will be determined.

No identification has been made so far, but family members on the scene were notified.

Lake Junior is a small body of water on TVA property, located near Chickamauga Dam off Highway 153.
