FORT OGLETHORPE - When officers tried to serve a man with a warrant Wednesday, according to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, he fired his gun.

GBI Special Agent in Charge Greg Ramey said 34-year-old Sky Douglas Bishop fired from inside a house on Maple Lane in Fort Oglethorpe when officers tried to come inside. He did not hit anybody, Ramey said, and the officers did not fire back. But the shots led to a 75-minute standoff, during which officers convinced Bishop over the phone to turn himself in.

Bishop was arrested around 1:15 p.m. and booked at the Catoosa County Jail. He was to be transferred to Hamilton County, where Ramey said he is wanted on a warrant by Chattanooga police on a charge of aggravated robbery. Ramey did not know the details of that crime.

"There could be some more [charges] for discharging a weapon at officers," Ramey said.

Investigators began watching the Maple Lane house Wednesday morning to see if Bishop was inside. Then, around noon, about 10 officers with the U.S. Marshals Service, Hamilton County Sheriff's Office, Lookout Mountain Judicial Circuit Drug Task Force and the GBI approached the house, hoping to serve Bishop with a warrant. That's when he fired a shot, Ramey said.

At least 10 more officers responded to the scene for the standoff.

Ramey declined to provide some details about the incident, like what kind of gun Bishop had and how far away he was when he pulled the trigger.

"We are in the process of conducting the crime scene investigation," he said.

In February 2012, the East Ridge Police Department charged Bishop with aggravated burglary, theft over $1,000, aggravated assault, felony evading and felony reckless endangerment. According to the police at the time, Bishop and a woman were caught trying to steal a generator.

They led an officer on a chase, according to police, and the officer crashed his car into somebody else's vehicle at the intersection of McBrien Road at South Terrace.
