Georgia DUI checkpoint confrontation ends with three officers injured, one man killed

GAINESVILLE, Ga. - Police say a confrontation at a DUI checkpoint resulted in a man killed, another arrested and three law enforcement officers injured in north Georgia.

Georgia State Patrol spokesman Capt. Mark Perry tells local news media that officers were working a DUI checkpoint on Interstate 985 Saturday night when a sports utility vehicle made an improper U-turn.

Georgia Bureau of Investigation officials say the chase ended when the SUV crashed into a patrol car and 36-year-old Rodrigo Guardiola and 31-year-old Epitacio Gudino fled from authorities.

Capt. Mark Perry says two troopers pursued the suspects in a foot chase for nearly a mile.

The GBI says the trooper then fatally shot Guardiola, who tried to drown the trooper.

Gudino was taken to the Hall County Detention Center.

Perry says the three injured officers were taken to Northeast Georgia Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries.
