Victim identified in Tuesday Cleveland train incident

Cleveland, Tenn., police say the man injured Tuesday morning in an incident involving a Norfolk Southern train has been identified as 28-year-old Joseph Dale Cross, of Thompson Springs Road, Cleveland.

Cleveland Officer Michael McCoy states in his report that Cross was found underneath a tanker car "several hundred meters east along the tracks from the railroad crossing on Old Chattanooga Pike Southwest."

The speed limit in that area is 60 mph but Norfolk Southern officials on Tuesday said trains usually travel at 40 mph on that stretch of rails.

Cleveland Police Department spokeswoman Evie West on Tuesday said authorities got the initial report around 6:45 a.m. and emergency officials found Cross shortly after they arrived on the scene at 7:04 a.m.
