Parts of tri-state area now in extreme drought status

As of this week a small part of Hamilton County, almost all of Georgia's Dade and Walker counties and much of Catoosa County are affected. In Alabama, areas of Jackson and DeKalb counties also are in an extreme drought.

Part of Hamilton County is the .01 percent of Tennessee in extreme drought status, but most of the tri-state area remains in a severe drought with the largest portions being in North Georgia and North Alabama.

All of East Tennessee is abnormally dry or worse, according to the center, as more than 43 percent of the U.S. experiences similar conditions.

The latest update from the drought center was released Thursday morning.
