A woman was shot to death when a man unintentionally discharged a weapon inside a home on Lewis Street today, according to Chattanooga police.

Aaron Randal, 22, fired his weapon while he was handling it inside a house at 1206 Lewis Street, according to police.

The bullet passed through a wall and mortally wounded Carly Ellis, 19, authorities said.

Ellis was pronounced dead at a local hospital, police Chief Fred Fletcher said.

Randal was handcuffed and placed in the back of a police car, but he had not been charged as of early this evening.

"We are doing a complete investigation, and if somebody behaved in a way that was criminal we will work with the district attorney to make sure that the community has the opportunity to hold people accountable to any criminal charges," Fletcher said.

Randal and Ellis are not related, but police believe say they likely had some sort of relationship. Investigators are still working to figure out how well the two knew each other.

Ellis did not live in the home.
