Polls are now closed in Georgia, and only a small percentage of voters in Northwest Georgia cast ballots in today's primary elections.

In Catoosa County, where voters are picking a county commission chairman and a state representative, 2,676 people had cast ballots as of 5 p.m., said Katie Thompson, a poll officer with the elections office. That is about 8.4 percent of the 31,928 registered voters in the county.

"It is very light," Thompson said.

In Walker County, where voters are selecting a Republican candidate for commissioner in the November general election, 2,420 people had voted as of 3 p.m. That's out of about 30,000 registered voters, said Brittany Richardson, a clerk in the county's elections office.

The winner of the commissioner race in Walker County will face incumbent Bebe Heiskell, who has been in office since 2001. She is running as an independent candidate for the first time.

Polls closed tonight at 7.
