The Hamilton County Board of Education is scheduled to vote Nov. 17 on whether or not to hire Kirk Kelly as the next district's superintendent.

Kelly has been serving as interim superintendent of Hamilton County Schools since April, following the resignation of former superintendent Rick Smith in March.

Last week, newly elected school board member Kathy Lennon made a motion to hire Kelly without conducting a search, and school board members David Testerman and Joe Galloway voiced support.

The board could not vote on Lennon's motion because it had not been publicly notified 15 days in advance, as required by board policy. The board instead voted during the meeting to hire a search firm to help conduct a national superintendent search.

The board's Executive Assistant Sherrie Ford sent out an email tonight notifying the public of the upcoming vote to hire Kelly, exactly 15 days in advance.

Several school board members have said they want the district's next leader to be from outside the district and bring change.

Kelly has served in Hamilton County Schools for decades, and before being named interim superintendent he worked as the assistant superintendent of testing and accountability.
