Crash kills 3, shuts down I-40 in Cumberland County

The westbound lanes of Interstate 40 in Cumberland County are closed after a massive crash that killed three people and left the wrecked vehicles blazing.

The Tennessee Department of Transportation said the crash happened at 1:57 p.m. near mile marker 320.

WATE -TV in Knoxville quoted the Tennessee Highway Patrol saying an eastbound truck tractor with no trailer crossed into the westbound lanes, striking a tractor trailer hauling automobiles and a passenger vehicle.

All three drivers were killed in the crash, according to WATE.

As of 7 p.m., TDOT said the westbound roadway is closed and traffic is being diverted at Peavine Road, exit 322. Eastbound traffic is delayed.

TDOT estimates the highway will be cleared by 11 p.m. EST.
