A pet pooch who missed his pounce and fell 40 feet down a Signal Mountain bluff was safely rescued Saturday.

Amy Maxwell, spokeswoman for Hamilton County Emergency Services, said the homeowner on North Palisades Drive called 911 about 12:30 p.m. and the Signal Mountain Fire Department responded within minutes.

The owner told firefighters his golden Labrador "saw an animal in the distance, took off running and jumped the wall," falling down the bluff, Maxwell said.

Firefighters rappelled down the bluff, put a rescue harness on the 84-pound Lab and brought it safely back to the top of the bluff, to the profuse gratitude of the homeowner, she said. The rescue took about 20 minutes, Maxwell said.
