A Bradley County emergency services worker needed 14 stitches after he was stabbed in the neck while trying to help a homeless person early this morning.

The attack happened on the Lee University campus, according to a news release from Dr. Lindsay L. Hathcock Jr., executive assistant to Bradley County Mayor D. Gary Davis.

Hathcock said EMS was called about 2 a.m. regarding a "vagrant" on the campus. The first responders found the person and were asking him about his medical state when he stood up and stabbed one EMS worker in the neck with a set of keys.

The slash barely missed the worker's carotid artery, Hathcock said.

The EMS worker was taken to a hospital for stitches and infection control, he said, but then returned to finish the work shift.

The assailant, whose name was not released, has been arrested and charged, Hathcock said.
