A judge today appointed a new attorney for Cortez Sims, a 19-year-old defendant accused of murder who has asked for new representation for the last month.

After considering the issue for two weeks, Judge Barry Steelman said defense attorney Lee Ortwein will represent Sims.

Police say Sims, then 17, killed one, injured two, and paralyzed a third victim during a shooting at College Hill Courts in January 2015.

Steelman also said he needed to postpone the Sept. 27 trial date out of necessity.

Instead of starting jury selection that day, Steelman said, attorneys will reconvene in his courtroom at 9 a.m. to "firm up" a trial date.
