Several East Tennessee school systems closed because of illness

Knox County Schools will close today and Wednesday because of several circulating illnesses, joining nearly a dozen districts that have cancelled classes over the past two weeks.

Interim Superintendent Buzz Thomas, in an email to parents, cited an increase in teacher and student absences "and now substitute teachers" absences in the decision to close schools and cancel extra-curricular activities.

"Nobody hates cancelling school worse than I do, but the health and safety of our students and staff must come first," Thomas wrote.
