Authorities say a man was wounded this afternoon in an officer-involved shooting incident near Monteagle, Tenn., in Franklin County.

Tennessee Bureau of Investigation spokeswoman Susan Niland confirmed that TBI agents are on the scene.

Twelfth Judicial District Attorney Mike Taylor said the shooting happened on Deepwoods Road, about a mile north of St. Andrew's Sewanee School on the west side of Monteagle. The incident involved one officer from the Monteagle Police Department, one from the Sewanee Police Department and two Franklin County Sheriff's Office deputies, Taylor said.

The man was reportedly struck by multiple gunshots and is described as a white male from the Antioch area near Nashville. It's not yet clear how severe the man's injuries are, Taylor said.

Taylor said he understood that initial reports were that the man had called 911 sometime prior to the shooting. Taylor said the call prompted officers to respond to the man's location.

"That's the preliminary report," Taylor said.

Taylor said he was unaware of any officers being injured in the incident but the man had fired on the officers before they returned fire, striking him.
