Chattanooga police: Man killed in Sunday night shooting was gang member

Police have identified a man killed Sunday evening as 27-year-old Damico Lawrence.

Chattanooga police responding to a reported shooting just before 3 p.m. found Lawrence dead from multiple gunshots in a room at the Hamilton Inn on the 2700 block of Rossville Boulevard.

Police said he was a validated gang member and the Violent Crimes Bureau is investigating. Gang members are considered validated when they meet certain criteria set by police.

On Sunday, a woman was seen distressed and crying as she spoke with Chattanooga police officers behind the crime scene tape that roped off the parking lot of the extended-stay hotel.

This marks Chattanooga's 18th homicide this year, according to Times Free Press records as of Sunday evening. At this time in 2016, there were 16 homicides, and since 2012, there have been 12 homicides within a 1-mile radius from Hamilton Inn.
