The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development awarded more than $1.6 million to the city of Chattanooga on Tuesday to confront lead hazards in homes.

Chattanooga was one of 48 cities across the country that received one of the grants and the only city in Tennessee.

The funding will be used to abate lead and other safety hazards in 75 Chattanooga homes, and about 7,600 homes in the U.S., according to a press release announcing the funding.

HUD's lead-based paint hazard control grant programs promote local efforts to eliminate dangerous lead paint and other housing-related health hazards from low-income homes, encourages private sector investment in lead hazard control and educates the public about the dangers of hazards in the home.
