LOS ANGELES (AP) - Don M. Mankiewicz, an Oscar-nominated screenwriter from a legendary Hollywood family who created the television shows "Marcus Welby, M.D." and "Ironside," has died at age 93.
His son John tells the Los Angeles Times (http://lat.ms/1GpfUpH ) that Mankiewicz died Saturday of congestive heart failure at his home near Los Angeles.
After graduating from Columbia University and serving in Army intelligence, Mankiewicz became a staff writer for the New Yorker and wrote a novel. As a screenwriter, he penned the pilots and further scripts for "Marcus Welby" and "Ironside," which became hits.
He earned an Academy Award nomination for his 1958 screenplay adaptation of "I Want to Live!"
His father was Herman J. Mankiewicz, the screenwriter behind "Citizen Kane." His uncle was Joseph Mankiewicz, director of "All About Eve" and other classics.
